The sweltering summer of 1972 has kicked into gear at the August Wilson Theatre, with Dog Day Afternoon officially opening on Broadway. Based on the Oscar-winning crime thriller starring Al Pacino and John Cazale, Dog Day Afternoon dramatizes a real life Brooklyn bank robbery that went awry. Broadway.com stopped by the red—or rather, orange—carpet to talk to the stars of the production about this bold reimagining. “You never really know what you have until there's an audience. That's what everyone says and that's true. And a play like this specifically is really so reliant on it. There's a lot of energy in this play and the audience is kind of like the 21st character,” says Ebon Moss-Bachrach , who plays robbery accomplice Sal De Silva, “You can only get so far in the rehearsal room. Nominations for the 41st annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced on April 1 by Amber Gray and Harvey Guillén , both currently appearing in the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show . The 2026 awards, produced by the Off-Broadway League and the Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by TDF, will be presented in a ceremony on May 3 at NYU Skirball. Audible Theater and P3 Productions’ Mexodus received the most musical nominations, with a total of nine including Outstanding Musical. Prince F*****t from Playwrights Horizons and Soho Rep was the most nominated play, with six including Outstanding Play. MCC Theater, Clubbed Thumb and Page 73’s Cold War Choir Practice and New York Theatre Workshop’s Saturday Church each received five nominations. Two-time Tony winner Kara Young , currently performing in Proof on Broadway, was once again nominated for her performance in the Seaview production Gruesome Playground Injuries . The cast and creative team of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Dog Day Afternoon stole our hearts on the opening night carpet. Directed by Rupert Goold, the new play is based on both the 1972 true crime story and the Oscar-winning motion picture. Its stars, Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach , were joined on the carpet by the rest of the company and celebrity guests including Molly Ringwald, Matty Matheson and Jesse Tyler Ferguson . Proof , the 2001 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Auburn about a father and daughter who have more similarities than they might realize, begins its Broadway run at the Booth Theatre on March 31. The official opening is set for April 16, with the limited engagement scheduled to run through July 19. Hamilton Tony winner Thomas Kail directs the first-ever New York revival, which stars Ayo Edebiri as Catherine, Don Cheadle as Robert, Jin Ha as Hale and two-time Tony winner Kara Young as Claire. Edebiri and Cheadle are making their Broadway debuts. Ha reunites with Kail after a run as Aaron Burr in Hamilton . Set in Chicago, the play follows Catherine, the brilliant but restless daughter of a renowned mathematics professor. Titled Hadestown: The Musical , the filmed stage performance features original principal cast members Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, Tony winner André De Shields as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades. It will be released theatrically in North America on July 24, and the U.K. will follow at a date to be announced. Noblezada, Gray and Page received Tony nominations for their otherworldly performances. Sydney James Harcourt made his Broadway debut in the 2001 revival of the 1956 Comden and Green musical Bells Are Ringing . Since then, he has appeared in American Idiot , the original Broadway company of Hamilton and now, Cats: The Jellicle Ball . His debut, a traditional revival of a classic musical, is in stark contrast to the rest of his résumé. With its fresh take on the feline phenomenon, The Jellicle Ball reimagines Cats in the Ballroom space, turning the musical's traditional junkyard on its head by bringing it to the runway. Having been with the show since its 2024 off-Broadway premiere, Harcourt has had time to spend with his character, Rum Tum Tugger, refining his interpretation to fit the bigger and bolder Broadway stage.
