A Variação da Ordem Pronominal em Complexos Verbais na Variedade Moçambicana do Português / The Variation of Pronominal Order in Verb Complexes in the Mozambican Variety of Portuguese

2024-12-30

Abstract: This paper analyses the variation of the pronominal order in verbal complexes in the Mozambican variety of portuguese, with the aim of understanding its occurrences and how it fits into the linguistic and social matrix. One of the concerns of sociolinguistics - in its intercession with various perspectives of language studies - is to understand the embedding of the phenomenon in variation in order to describe the tendencies that can be observed in it. To this end, this study is based on the Theory of Variation and Change (Weinreich; Labov; Herzog, 1968 [2006]), and its corpus is made up of speeches extracted from 3 videos of 3 television programs from Maputo city (South) and Nampula City (North). A total of 8 informants (4 for each city) were considered to constitute the research sample. The results show that the variation in pronominal order in verb complexes in Mozambican Portuguese, reflected in the productivity of the intra-CV variant with proclisis to the infinitive thematic verb regardless of the morphosyntactic context, shows a very significant degree of embedding in the linguistic and social matrix, which leads us to think of a possible change in progress in this variety when compared to the European one, which is taken as the standard norm in Mozambique.

Guiné Equatorial: política linguística, manutenção e obsolescência das línguas oficiais, étnicas e crioulas em um contexto ibero-africano / Equatorial Guinea: Language Policy, Maintenance and Obsolescence of Official, Ethnic, and Creole Languages in an Ibero-African Context

Abstract: In the Republic of Equatorial Guinea (REG), Spanish, French, and Portuguese are official languages. Additionally, the population also uses African languages (Fang, Pichi, Bube, Fa d’Ambô, among others). With rural-urban migration increasing, languages of different ethnic groups have been restricted to their traditional territories. Alongside Spanish, in recent years, Fang and Pichi have become the most spoken languages, especially in urban settings by an ever-growing young population. Here, our goal is to describe and analyze the linguistic situation in the country, the maintenance or obsolescence of REG’s languages, and the role of the official languages (Spanish, French, and Portuguese).

Parâmetros vocais e prosódicos na fala de influenciadores digitais transgênero da mídia social brasileira / Vocal and Prosodic Parameters on Transgender Digital Influencers’ Speech on Brazilian Social Media

Abstract: Voice and prosody in speech of transgender Brazilian digital influencers were analyzed, using perceptual assessment and acoustic analyses to identify similarities and differences. Acoustic speech patterns between transgender (trans) and cisgender (cis) men and women were also compared. Speech samples analyzed consisted of audios from twelve selected videos published on Instagram. In a blinded perceptual assessment, judges evaluated how they judged the speaker’s gender and identified prosodic boundaries and prominences used for expressive purposes. In the acoustical analysis, the voice was measured by the fundamental frequency; prosodic boundaries were measured by f0 variation of pause production; also, prominence marking was measured by f0 variation and intensity. Results show that transgender subjects’ speech, either by their vocal expression or by their prosodic characteristics, is not perceived exclusively through the recovery of acoustical patterns. Acoustic parameters measured in speech of transgender subjects in comparison with speech of cisgender subjects showed that transgender speech is dialectically constituted, since there are points of approximation and distancing between the characterization of vocal and prosodic aspects of their speech and the characterization of these aspects in speech of the declared gender.

Demostración matemática: género discursivo y conexiones lógicas desde una mirada lingüística / Mathematical Proof: Discourse Genre and Logical Connexions from a Linguistic Perspective

2024-12-30

Natalia Leiva Salum, Margarita Vidal Lizama

Abstract: One of the main tasks faced by those studying Calculus, Algebra or Geometry at tertiary level is writing the text known as ‘mathematical proof’. The purpose of a proof is to prove that an initial statement is true by deductive reasoning, through the alternation of mathematical symbolism and natural language. Beyond the solving of the problem itself, writing this kind of multisemiotic discourse involves particular difficulties; one of them is to establish logical relationships, through natural language, that make sense of relations along the proof. The aim of this study is to offer an initial description of the proof as a genre as well as of the patterns of connexion that are relevant to it. Based on an interdisciplinary work between linguists and mathematicians, a set of proofs constructed by Mathematics professors at a Chilean university are described. This characterization is grounded on Systemic Functional Linguistics, with focus on ideational discourse semantics, connexion in Spanish and mathematical discourse. The paper proposes three stages for the proof: Point of the proof ^ Mathematical reasoning ^ Confirmation. The paper also shows that mathematical proof, like genres from other disciplines, displays predominantly external causal connexions realised congruently and incongruently, and internal connexions realised congruently. The analysis shows that connexions are crucial for the ideational formulation of propositions and for threading together the different stages of the mathematical proof genre.
