Three complementary structural studies show how the plant receptor NUT perceives a disulfide-locked loop in SCREW phytocytokines and recruits a SERK co-receptor. These studies reveal a distinct mode of cyclic peptide perception by an LRR receptor kinase.

SCREW peptides adopt a disulfide-dependent neck-ring-like conformation to induce the activation of the NUT–BAK1 immune receptor complex, which may represent a common mechanism among secreted cysteine-rich peptides with only two cysteines.

Climate change leads to changes in precipitation distribution and the frequency of extreme weather conditions. For temperate forests to survive this may require a targeted forest engineering approach.

The cryogenic electron microscopy structure of the NUT/HSL3–SCREW2/CTNIP4–BAK1 complex reveals a cross-ribbon peptide conformation recognized by a glycan-formed pocket on NUT, with implications for stomatal immunity and disease-resistant crop design.

The RAB5 effector REAP1/AtSWAP70 connects endosomal trafficking to ROP signalling by regulating active ROP7 localization. This pathway contributes to gametophyte development and involves crosstalk between two major GTPase systems in plants.

Plants express diverse small GTP-binding proteins including Ras-associated binding (RAB) proteins that direct membrane trafficking and Rho-of-plant (ROP) proteins that mostly regulate cytoskeletal organization. Now, integrators of ROP and RAB signalling have been identified as essential for plant reproduction.

Terrestrial vegetation can recover from late-spring frost and even compensate for frost-induced productivity losses. We show that reduced damage and enhanced regrowth jointly drive this overcompensation, a widespread phenomenon that is predicted to become more prevalent with climate warming.
